I AM RECEIVING ENQUIRY LETTERS FROM HM CUSTOMS & EXCISE. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Firstly do not panic! Read the letters carefully. You will see that it is asking you to provide quite a lot of information, which may appear to be a little overwhelming. The letter may give you a date by which time they expect you to provide this. However if you think it will be difficult to meet the deadline then it may be a good idea to contact them and to explain the reason and and ask for the date to be extended. There is a good chance they will agree particularly if they think that you are taking the enquiry seriously.

The worst thing you can do is ignore the letters and hope they will go away. They will not do this! Part of dealing with HMRC enquiries is communication. Use the telephone and respond to all their letters. If there is likely to be a delay in responding then advise them by letter giving the reasons. If you have made mistakes in your tax returns then honesty is the best policy.

An HMRC enquiry can be stressful and we can deal with it for you. We know their procedures and by employing us we can take the emotion that you may feel out of the situation.
